The benefits of exercise and workouts in the water

Exercising in the water has shown to provide benefits for your flexibility, balance, coordination, cardiovascular, muscular strength and endurance, weight management, stress management, social interaction and also contributes to an enhanced quality of life, healthier lifestyle, therapeutic relaxation, enhanced feelings of well-being, improved overall health, low impact on joints, decreased muscle soreness, and best of all it is a fun and enjoyable workout.

Water aerobics are not just for the sick, obese and elderly, exercise in the water is for everyone, and has even become popular among athletes who are training for long races such as marathons as moving in the water increases a person's flexibility and may help prevent injuries.

In our water aerobics class we incorporate equipment like Stationary Bicycles, Water Dumbbells, Paddles and Noddles to further increase strength gains and challenge yourself. Water is 12 times denser than the air, so exercising in the water can be very challenging and just as intense a workout as anything on land, sometimes even more. There are plenty of modifications that are possible to make in order to increase or decrease the difficulty of the moves and you are always free to go at your own pace.

Thanks to the buoyancy of water you will be strengthening your muscles and improving your cardiovascular fitness without subjecting your body to additional wear and tear. Also working out in water provides equal resistance through your full range of motion and helps improve balance.

Researcher Martin Juneau in Canada has undertaken studies that lead him to believe that oxygen consumption and heart rate are lower while you exercise in the water, in other words, you cardiovascular system works more efficiently doing the same amount of exercise. You will feel that it is easy to do exercise in the water but your aerobic capacity increases. Researchers believe that the hydrostatic pressure around your body helps the blood going back to your heart therefore decreases the amount of times your heart has to pump blood, lowering the heart rate and the amount of oxygen required to sustain strenuous exercise. Juneau and his team are currently carrying out further research in order to confirm the results of their initial studies (CNN Mexico, J. Wilson).
